Psychology Of A Growth Mindset
A growth mindset can be simplified as a belief of viewing failure as learning opportunities rather than setbacks.
Individuals who continuously develop their mindset are lifelong learners who will be able to fulfill their full potential & help others achieve it as well.
There are 3 elements that those who achieves mastery & success seem to have in common:
✅Genuine Interest
✅Commitment To Consistency
✅Practice, Coach, & Feedback Receptive
Okay now that you understand the psychology, lets dive into 4 of Amazon's leadership principles
Amazon's Day 1 & Day 2 Mentality
Big things start small. The biggest oak starts from an acorn, you've got to be willing to let that acorn grow into a little sapling, and then finally into a small tree and then maybe one day it'll be a big business on its own.
Curious as to what skyrocketed Amazon's growth to the billion dollar company it is today?
When I was an intern at Amazon, I learned about their "Day 1" mentality.
In business terms, this means maintaining a long-term focus, obsessing over customers and their needs, and boldly innovating to meet those needs.
Day 2, on the other hand, is the complete opposite of Day 1...
Jeff Bezos describes Day 2 in his 2016 Letter to Shareholders as: "Day 2 is stasis. Followed by irrelevance. Followed by excruciating painful decline. Followed by death."
What Bezos is basically saying is that Day 1 is leads to growth & improvement while Day 2 is about staying in place & being consistent.
But even though the company has grown to astronomical heights, it still sticks to being Day 1 through Bezos's leadership principles.
But it doesn't only have to apply to business, we can incorporate into our mindsets as well.
Here's how I see it:
✅ Day 1 = Growth & Improvement
✅ Day 2 = Maintenance & Consistency
Lets explore how we can apply the top 4 Amazon's leadership principles to craft our own growth mindset for personalized success.
Amazon's Principles For Rapid Growth
Learn & Be Curious
Learn & Be Curious: Leaders are never done learning and always seek to improve themselves. They are curious about new possibilities and act to explore them.
Curiosity is innate in human beings, meaning the desire to learn something.
✅ Don't be afraid to ask questions
✅ Take plenty notes & review them
Think Big
Think Big: Thinking small is a self-fulfilling prophecy. Leaders create and communicate a bold direction that inspires results. They think differently and look around corners for ways to serve customers.
Look at the world's most successful businesses.
Each one has a great thinker behind them.
Take Steve Jobs, an incredible thinker.
He always thought big...10x bigger.
Here's how:
✅ Let yourself think - put your phone away & go be bored. Let the gears start turning
✅ Stop saying something is impossible - don't limit yourself
✅ Don't let external influence your thoughts
Bias For Action
Bias For Action: Speed matters in business. Many decisions and actions are reversible and do not need extensive study. We value calculated risk taking.
✅ Learn to take risks. Start small like trying a new menu item at your favorite restaurant & work you way up
✅ Create a plan for the risk you want to take & have a plan B ready
✅ Think on your feet. Trust yourself & stop hesitating
Dive Deep
Dive Deep: Leaders operate at all levels, stay connected to the details, audit frequently, and are skeptical when metrics and anecdote differ. No task is beneath them.
✅ No matter what you are learning. Try to learn it to the best of your abilities
✅ Ask a bunch of "whys" and go from there
✅ No matter if the knowledge/task is boring or not benefiting you right now, don't miss the opportunity to learn it
